IRONMAN 70.3 Sharm El Sheikh
Sharm El Sheikh
Your guide to triathlon in Egypt: where to train, where to race, and how to plan.
Triathlon in Egypt has grown steadily over the past ten years, with mild winters, calm Red Sea swim venues, and an event calendar that includes IRONMAN 70.3, Africa Triathlon Cups, and friendly beginner races. There is a small but active club scene, mostly based in Cairo and Alexandria.
Practical answers to the most common questions about triathlon in Egypt: seasons, gear, safety, training, and the main events on the calendar.
Egypt brings together the three things every triathlete needs in close range of each other: calm swim water, open roads, and runnable terrain. The Red Sea coast is the strongest fit; the water stays between 22 and 29 degrees year-round, the bike roads are flat to gently rolling through desert scenery, and the run promenades along the bays are easy underfoot. Race organisation has improved a lot, with events like IRONMAN 70.3 Egypt and the Soma Bay Endurance Festival running to international standards (chip timing, full medical cover, and World Triathlon recognition).
The main season runs from October to March, when air temperatures are between 20 and 26 degrees, the Red Sea is calm, and desert roads are cool enough for longer bike sessions. In summer (June to August) it gets very hot inland, often above 40 degrees, so outdoor cycling and running becomes risky without very early starts and careful hydration. Red Sea resorts like Hurghada, Sahl Hasheesh, and Ain Sokhna stay milder thanks to sea breezes, but even there August racing is not advised unless you are well used to the heat. Most major races are scheduled for November, February, or May for this reason.
Three things matter: managing the heat, getting comfortable in open water, and being careful on the roads.
IRONMAN 70.3 Egypt at Sahl Hasheesh is the headline race: a 1.9 km Red Sea swim, a 90 km bike through the desert around Hurghada, and a 21.1 km run along the bay promenade. The race offers qualifying slots for the IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship. The Soma Bay Endurance Festival, held since 2014, is the biggest multisport event in the country and runs Supersprint, Sprint, and Olympic distances at Soma Bay resort near Safaga; there is even a 1 km children's race. For elite and age-group athletes looking for continental racing, the Africa Triathlon Cup is held annually at El Galala or Sahl Hasheesh as part of the World Triathlon Continental Cup calendar (most recently in February 2026). For beginners, the Tri For Fun series by Tenacity Coaching is a friendly way to try your first race.
Egypt's triathlon community is small and welcoming, but a few practical points help on race day. The transition zone is a quiet, focused area; keep your setup tidy and respect the space of the people next to you. Most races start very early (often before sunrise) to beat the heat, so plan to arrive the night before if you can. On the bike, watch for sand drifts and rough edges near the shoulder; on race courses, stay in the middle of your lane. After the race, most events finish with a beachside or poolside gathering where coaches, club members, and volunteers all mix. It is one of the easiest ways to find training partners and a club for your next event.
Egypt has a small but growing club scene, with most of the country's competitive athletes coming through a handful of clubs and coaches. The Trimachine (New Cairo, Sheikh Zayed, Alexandria) is currently the top-ranked triathlon club in the TriFactory league, with programmes from beginner to elite under one roof. Wadi Degla Club runs the largest multi-sport facility network in the country, with 20 sports academies across Maadi, Nakhil, Sheraton, October City, Alexandria, Damietta, and Assiut; many Cairo triathletes use it for their swim and strength base. Tenacity Coaching runs triathlon and endurance coaching online from Cairo and organises the beginner-friendly Tri For Fun series. Team Bodz and Night Runners both compete in the national triathlon league. The TriFactory, based in Zamalek, is the leading mass-participation event company and organises the Soma Bay Endurance Festival, Trailmaster Wadi Degla, and the national club league. The Egyptian Triathlon Federation, based at International Cairo Stadium in Nasr City, is the national governing body and is affiliated with World Triathlon.

A sweeping Red Sea bay with calm, sheltered water that suits swim starts, a flat bike loop through desert mountain scenery, and a promenade run along the bay. Former home of IRONMAN 70.3 Egypt (2021 to 2023) and several Africa Triathlon Cup events.
A self-contained resort village 20 minutes south of Hurghada International Airport, surrounded on three sides by the Red Sea. Hosts the Soma Bay Endurance Festival annually (Egypt's biggest multisport event) with Olympic, Sprint, and Supersprint distances on a flat, fast course.
A purpose-built new city between the Red Sea coastline and the eastern mountain range, about 1.5 hours from Cairo. El Galala has wide, professionally designed asphalt roads suited to cycling, Red Sea swimming, and coastal running. Has hosted the Africa Triathlon Cup, the Africa Triathlon Sprint Championships, and National Championship races.
A 12 km desert canyon in Maadi on the outskirts of Cairo, often called the Grand Canyon of Egypt. Hard-packed dirt trails, sand, and rocky terrain make it one of the most useful training environments for Cairo-based triathletes: trail running, mountain biking, and cycling intervals. Nearby Wadi Degla Club covers swimming and structured training.
The Hurghada seafront and El Gouna's lagoon complex offer solid options for open-water swim training and flat road cycling in a resort setting. Hurghada's boat-sheltered inner bays give year-round swim access. El Gouna's purpose-built lagoon system allows supervised open-water sessions away from boat traffic.
