Wadi Degla Protectorate, Cairo
Egypt's most accessible and popular trail running destination, about 20 km southeast of Cairo in Zahraa El Maadi. The canyon's main valley trail follows a rock-and-sand floor with 140 m of elevation gain over 11.6 km, runnable at any level. Experienced runners can access longer routes with up to 1,050 m of cumulative elevation gain. Terrain is roughly 70% hard-packed dirt and 30% rocky and sandy, with canyon walls throughout. Home to the Roody 50x trail festival (October; 5 km, 10 km, 28 km, and 55 km distances, ITRA-rated, organised by Ultra Ibex; 2026 edition Saturday 24 October). Entry fee around $1. Open daily 7 am to 6 pm. Do not run here within 48 hours of rain.
