MODERN PENTATHLON RACES

Modern pentathlon combines five disciplines into a single competition day: fencing, swimming, obstacle racing (which replaced equestrian show jumping after Paris 2024), running, and laser pistol shooting. Running and shooting are combined into a single segment called the laser run, which is why most descriptions of the sport list four bands of activity even though there are five disciplines.

The sport was created by Baron Pierre de Coubertin and first appeared at the Stockholm 1912 Olympic Games. It was inspired by the all-around demands placed on a 19th-century military courier: ride an unfamiliar horse, fight with a sword, swim a river, shoot a pistol, and run to safety. Equestrian show jumping was part of the sport for over 100 years. After Paris 2024 it was replaced by obstacle racing, a head-to-head race over a course of eight obstacles inspired by the Ninja Warrior (Sasuke) television format. The new format debuted at junior level in 2023 and at senior level in 2025. It will make its Olympic debut at the 2028 Los Angeles Games.

Egypt has built one of the world's deepest pentathlon programmes through grassroots club development, regular hosting of major events, and a federation that invests in youth pathways. The Egyptian Modern Pentathlon Federation (EMPF), led by President Sherif El-Erian, runs junior academies and club programmes across Cairo and Alexandria. The country has produced Olympic medallists at Tokyo 2020 (Ahmed El-Gendy, silver) and Paris 2024 (El-Gendy, gold), and has won multiple World Championships golds at both senior and junior level. The shift away from equestrian to obstacle racing is expected to widen access further, because obstacle courses are cheaper and easier to set up than equestrian facilities.

At UIPM World Cup and World Championship events, all five disciplines are completed on a single competition day in this order: Fencing → Obstacle → Swimming → Laser Run. Points accumulated across the first three disciplines determine each athlete's starting position in the laser run. The faster you scored earlier in the day, the bigger your head start. Whoever crosses the line first wins. Men and women compete in separate events, and most major championships also include relay and mixed-relay events.

Yes. Modern pentathlon in Egypt is organised through the Egyptian Modern Pentathlon Federation (EMPF), which runs junior academies and club programmes in Cairo and Alexandria. Young athletes typically begin in tetrathlon (four disciplines) from around age 12 and progress to the full pentathlon as they develop. The two main training and competition hubs are AUC in New Cairo and AASTMT in Alexandria, both of which provide facilities for all four competition disciplines within walking distance of one another. Egypt is one of the busiest hosts of international pentathlon competitions. Key recurring events include:

• UIPM World Cup Cairo (April) at the American University in Cairo. The 2026 edition (8 to 12 April) welcomed nearly 200 athletes from 33 nations, including Sri Lanka's first World Cup pentathletes.

• UIPM World Cup Final / African Championship at AASTMT Alexandria. In 2025 the World Cup Final itself featured the top 72 athletes from 23 countries (3 to 6 July); over the wider 4 to 14 July window, including the relay World Championships and African Championship, around 340 athletes from 36 countries took part.

• UIPM Pentathlon World Championships. Egypt has hosted the senior World Championships twice: in Cairo in 2017 (169 athletes, 29 nations, near the Pyramids of Giza) and in Alexandria in 2022 (170 athletes, 35 nations).

• UIPM Junior and Youth World Championships. Alexandria hosted junior or youth championships in 2021, 2024, and 2025.

• U-15 World Championship and inaugural Arab Championship, Alexandria, August 2025.

Ahmed El-Gendy is Egypt's most decorated modern pentathlete. Born in January 2000, he won gold at the 2018 Buenos Aires Youth Olympics. At Tokyo 2020 he won silver with 1,477 points, becoming the first African to win any Olympic medal in modern pentathlon. Three years later in Paris he went one better, winning gold at the Palace of Versailles on 10 August 2024 with a world-record score of 1,555 points, finishing 13 seconds ahead of silver medallist Taishu Sato of Japan. Paris 2024 was the last Olympics to feature equestrian show jumping in the pentathlon, so El-Gendy's title is also the final one of that era.

Malak Ismail (born 9 June 2005) is one of the leading young athletes in Egypt's women's programme. She won gold in the women's relay (with Amira Kandil) at the 2023 Senior World Championships in Bath, England, and gold in the relay at the 2023 Junior World Championships (with Farida Khalil) in Druskininkai, Lithuania. She secured an Olympic quota spot for Egypt at the African and Oceania Championships in Cairo in September 2023 aged 18, and qualified for the final at the Paris 2024 Olympics. Salma Abdelmaksoud (also listed in some Egyptian press as Salma Ayman) made history at the 2018 Buenos Aires Youth Olympics, winning gold in the girls' individual modern pentathlon on the same day Ahmed El-Gendy won the boys' event. Egypt finished the 2018 Youth Games with nine medals overall, its best Youth Olympic campaign to that point. She went on to represent Egypt at senior level and was part of the mixed-relay team that won gold at the 2023 World Championships in Bath alongside Mohanad Shaban.

Farida Khalil and the women's relay generation. Farida Khalil, who finished first in the women's final at the UIPM 2025 World Cup at AUC aged 14, is part of a strong wave of Egyptian junior women. The junior pair of Jana Attia and Zeina Amer won the women's junior relay gold at the UIPM 2025 Pentathlon Relay World Championships in Alexandria.

Modern pentathlon's biggest format change since 1912 is the move from equestrian show jumping to obstacle racing. The UIPM signed a licensing deal with Tokyo Broadcasting System (TBS), the makers of Sasuke (Ninja Warrior), to use specific obstacle designs and programme elements in official UIPM competitions. The new course is 60 to 70 metres long and uses eight obstacles that test climbing, swinging, balancing, and grip strength. Athletes race in two lanes head-to-head, and the first across wins the heat.

The change first took effect at junior level in 2023, replaced equestrian at senior level in 2025, and will make its Olympic debut at the 2028 Los Angeles Games. The first Obstacle World Championships were held in Beijing in 2025. For Egypt, the change is helpful: obstacle courses are cheaper to build and easier to maintain than equestrian facilities, which lowers the barrier for new clubs and schools.
